STRATEGIC PLAN IMPLEMENTATION SUPPORT
Strategic Plan Implementation Support
Plan approval marks the start of the hard work of implementation.
The plan asks your organization to work differently, and the day-to-day work already in place doesn't pause to make room for it.
Implementation support gives your leadership team experienced partners for that work: aligning your structure, roles, budgets, and departmental plans with the direction you've committed to, so the plan becomes how your organization operates rather than a document it refers to.
What Is Strategic Plan Implementation Support?
Strategic Plan Implementation Support is Focused Momentum's project-based consulting for strategy execution: turning a new strategic plan or strategic direction into how your organization operates.
It most often follows a Strategy Summit®, but these services are available to any organization ready to implement its new plan. Each engagement is scoped to your highest-priority implementation gaps and overseen by Founder and Chief Strategist Cecilia Lynch, with specialists from our vetted bench leading specific workstreams alongside your project sponsor.
Are You Ready for Implementation?
Implementation Support is for organizations that have decided where they're going and now need to make it operational.
That decision usually takes one of two forms:
A new strategic plan:
A formally approved, multi-year plan with a shared vision, core strategies, and milestones, ratified by your board or leadership team.
A new direction:
A committed shift that may not yet have a full plan outlined, such as entering a new market, restructuring an organization, integrating a merger, or responding to a major funding change.
You're ready for implementation when:
- Your board or leadership team has approved the plan or committed to the direction
- Leadership agrees on the first priorities the organization needs to act on
- A senior leader has been assigned as project sponsor
- You're prepared to commit people, time, and budget to making the changes the plan requires
Not there yet?
If your leadership team doesn't yet agree on direction, a Strategy Summit® or Strategy Boost™ is the better place to start.
Signs Your Organization Needs Implementation Support
Our implementation support is likely the right fit if:
- Your plan is approved, and each department took it back to its own planning and budgeting, but no one can say how next year's budget connects to the strategic direction.
- Your structure, roles, and reporting relationships were built for the strategy you had, not the one you've just adopted.
- The new direction requires capabilities your organization hasn't needed before, such as brand building, fundraising, or new financial reporting.
- Cross-functional work starts strong, then drifts back to solving the same old problems within a month.
- You're new to your role and inherited a plan that was approved before you arrived, and you need it to take hold across an organization you're still getting to know.
Who We Support Through Implementation
Companies
CEOs, presidents, and division leaders whose plan now has to show up in operating plans, budgets, and the way teams work together. When a new CEO inherits an approved plan, implementation is often where they find out whether the organization can actually carry it.
Nonprofit & Mission-Driven Organizations
Executive Directors and Board Chairs who need a new plan to reach programs, fundraising, and staff roles without overloading a team that's already stretched. Implementation is where the board's direction and staff capacity have to meet.
Academic Departments
Department heads, physician leaders, research directors, and administrative teams are implementing a plan across patient care, sponsored research, and teaching at once. Every change has to work around the commitments that fund the work, whether patient care or research grants and contracts, and within the governance of a larger institution.
How Implementation Support Works
In the final stages of planning, or right after your plan is approved or your direction is committed, we help you assess implementation priorities and gaps in your team's capacity to complete priorities on time. Our team will then help you build your implementation roadmap and contract with you for the services we can provide.
Your implementation roadmap might look like this:
30 Days
In the first 30 days after plan approval, it's time to announce and align.
- Strategic plan communication: communicating the approved plan to each stakeholder group, including those who helped shape it, at the level of detail each needs: stakeholder analysis, message development, and presentation design and preparation.
- Organizational alignment: an organizational alignment plan that defines who owns each strategic priority: implementation capabilities analysis, organizational redesign, functional and leadership team role clarity, and transition planning.
Year 1
Putting the plan to work across departments and building the capabilities it requires.
- Departmental and initiative planning: building concrete departmental and cross-departmental initiative plans, integrated with existing commitments, with departmental and individual role clarity.
- Brand strategy and marketing planning: positioning the organization for the audiences its new direction depends on.
- Leadership development and coaching: strengthening the leadership capabilities the plan requires, including individual coaching for leaders the change asks the most of.
Years 2 & 3
More expansive, multi-year strategic initiatives and an annual planning retreat each year.
- Product and program development: aligning your product or program roadmap with the long-range vision.
- Core values and culture alignment: making sure how people work together supports where the organization is going.
- Team building and new skills training programs: building team cohesion and the skills new priorities call for.
- Annual planning retreats: keeping the plan current and connecting it to each year's priorities and budget.
After 3 Years
Once most plans are in place, it's time to refresh your strategic thinking and update your plan.
- Strategic plan update: an expanded annual retreat to refresh core plan assumptions, explore and integrate emerging issues, update the long-range Vision of Success, draft new strategic goals, and produce an updated strategic plan.
Support Your Plan
The Strategic Plan Implementation Explained
Bring in experienced partners to activate your plan: align your structure, roles, budgets, and departmental plans with the direction you've committed to. Your plan becomes how your organization operates, not a document you refer to.
What Your Organization Receives
- Your implementation roadmap, with projects, their order, and a rough timeline
- A clear, shared understanding of who owns each strategic priority
- A structure, roles, and management cadence aligned with the plan
- Concrete implementation plans for each department or functional team, integrated with existing commitments
- Resource, role, and capability gaps identified before they stall execution
- A plan that stays current through annual renewal rather than being rewritten from scratch

What Implementation Support Won't Do
Our team will not usurp your leadership team, and we won't let project scope expand without your authorization and a clear fee-change agreement.
Implementation belongs to your teams, and it will test the choices your plan made.
Implementation Support gives your organization experienced partners and proven methods to turn those choices into how you operate, and to adjust with confidence when conditions change.
Why Organizations Choose Focused Momentum for Implementation
- Continuity from planning to execution. When we've built the plan with you, implementation starts from shared knowledge rather than a new consultant's learning curve. Many of our implementation clients started with a Strategy Summit® and asked us back when it was time to put the plan to work.
- A named strategist overseeing the work. Cecilia Lynch stays accountable for the engagement, even when bench specialists lead individual workstreams with your project sponsor.
- Methods proven in practice. Each service draws on approaches Focused Momentum has refined across over 25 years of strategic planning consulting engagements, not generic frameworks.
- Built to work without us. We strengthen your leaders' and teams' ability to carry out the plan, so your organization doesn't depend on us to run it.
Many organizations do short-term strategic planning: they plan for three years, then reassess where they are before deciding what to focus on next.
We wanted a very powerful, bold vision to guide our mission into the future, and we are indeed much stronger and more sustainable because we took the longer view.
We chose Focused Momentum first because Cecilia brought a ton of experience, and she was really easy to talk to.
I think another key factor was finding someone who would feel confident and be direct working with strong A-type personalities associated with physicians. And we felt, and were correct in believing, she could do that.
Our founder is a classic entrepreneur; he has a founder's strategic mind and seems to operate from a gut-feel, strategy-guy approach. He struggles to translate his thoughts into a business plan. Using the Focused Momentum approach, we pulled those great ideas out of his head and built a plan the entire team could implement.
Clear direction for strategic planning and a really good focus on the big picture.
Great follow-through.
The Focused Momentum team facilitates conversations within the group without derailing them. They kept the group on track and allowed us to formulate our thoughts and objectives.
I realize our strategy session with Focused Momentum set us on a path to consider a different future than going it alone. Now, four years later, the future for our entity and staff is very bright. Cecilia and her team were an amazing force in facilitating our first real strategic planning process.
What’s refreshing about Cecilia is that she has been doing this for a long time and has seen it all. By drawing comparisons to other industries, business models, or cycles, she reveals things that you just can’t see. And she doesn’t hesitate; if you are off track, she tells you right away. For me, that was a phenomenal experience!
As my career has evolved, I have brought Focused Momentum along. In my last three organizations, she has helped me establish a common vision and a clear path forward with each new team. Cecilia has helped me make order out of chaos so that I could lead.
Great strategic framework! Cecilia has the best strategic mind I have ever worked with.
Cecilia does a terrific job guiding us through the process and pushing us to address the harder issues. The strategic planning session was very effective in helping us agree on a new mission statement, a framework for evaluating opportunities and making go/no-go decisions, and initiatives for programs and development.
The strategic clarity we now have has really boosted our team's performance because we have a documented plan. In our environment, we can get distracted easily because it's so complicated. Having a documented plan has really helped people focus on the task at hand.
Focused Momentum’s process guided us to reconnect with our mission and clarify our target market. This helped us evaluate what the client was asking us. Once we refocused on our target audience with a clear view of what we would and would not do for them, it became easier to position ourselves against competitors and increased our confidence – even when we had to say “no”.
