Project Scoping and Project Design

Each new client engagement begins by Focused Momentum defining the scope and design of the project. After a series of phone conversations, we are able to provide a detailed cost estimate including:

  • Clarification of challenge
  • Draft project process flow with clear phases
  • Estimate of costs

Assessment

Once a project contract is signed and a project team is formed, to guide the design of the project, we launch the Assessment Phase. Depending on the project this could consist of one or more of the following:

  • Review and synthesis of client materials particular to the project
  • Interview of all key stakeholders: internal and potentially external
  • Survey of broad base of stakeholders: internal: staff, volunteers, board members; or external: customers/clients, vendors, and partners. Surveys are primarily administered online.
  • Discussion groups
  • Secondary market or competitive research

The Assessment Phase ends at the first Planning Session.

Strategy Creation

For Strategic Planning Projects, the first Planning Session is a Strategy Creation Session. The Strategy Creation Session is an intensive two-day planning retreat. In just two days the essence of your Strategic Direction is defined:

  • A comprehensive Assessment Summary (Assets, Obstacles, Vulnerabilities, and Favorable Forces)
  • A shared Vision of Success
  • Definition of your Future Business Model
  • A high level Strategic Direction (articulated in three distinct phases)
  • Outline of strategic ideas (initiatives) that need further development before the Strategic Direction can be adopted

Initiative Development

Directly following the Strategy Creation Session the Strategic Initiative Development Phase begins. Teams are formed to take the strategic ideas (initiatives) created during the Strategy Creation Session and build them into full strategies. This process can take as little as a month, but typically takes two. These teams are supported by the Focused Momentum team.

Strategy Integration and Documentation

When the Initiative Teams are ready, there is a Strategy Integration Session. This is a one and a half to two day session in which each Initiative Team presents their strategy and a final fully integrated strategic direction is crafted. At this session implementation plans are drafted to ensure immediate action. This is the beginning of the support Focused Momentum provides to leadership to maintain Leadership Momentum. After the Strategy Integration Session, Focused Momentum works with the Project Team or Leadership Team to finalize a simple, easy to use Strategic Direction Document that serves as the core of the organization’s new Strategic Plan.

Implementation Support

Once the Strategy Planning Process is complete, we are often asked by our clients to augment their management team by providing additional strategy development or implementation planning. Additionally, we stay in relationship with our clients over many years often formalizing this relationship into a coaching role.
